AMD’s Next-Gen RDNA 5 Architecture Eyes Higher Frequencies
AMD’s next-generation graphics architecture, RDNA 5, is still a long way from an official launch. However, a new leak from a reliable source has provided an early glimpse into what the company is targeting for its future GPUs. According to prominent leaker Kepler_L2, internal AMD materials have listed a 3.1 to 3.4 GHz target frequency range for the RDNA 5 architecture.

This information was shared on the AnandTech forums, where Kepler_L2 responded to a discussion about expected frequencies for AMD’s next-gen APUs. The leaker stated that AMD is targeting 3.1-3.4 GHz with RDNA 5, covering a broader range of products, including discrete GPUs and integrated graphics.
How It Compares to Current Radeon GPUs
For context, AMD’s current flagship Radeon RX 9070 XT (RDNA 4) has a boost clock of up to 2.97 GHz. A 3.1 GHz target would represent around a 4% increase, while reaching 3.4 GHz would be roughly 14% higher.
However, it’s important to note that this target range may not apply universally across all RDNA 5 products. The architecture is expected to span multiple segments—from discrete Radeon graphics cards and integrated GPUs to custom chips for next-generation consoles. Final frequencies will likely depend on the specific die, power limits, and product type.
What This Means for Performance
While higher clock speeds are promising, they don’t guarantee equivalent performance gains. The overall performance of RDNA 5 will depend on several factors, including the number of compute units, architectural improvements, memory bandwidth, and power efficiency. Kepler_L2 has previously shared details about RDNA 5 implementation, including changes to its Work Group Processor (WGP) design.
The architecture is also expected to introduce new features that will define the next generation of gaming—both on PC and consoles. AMD and Sony have already unveiled some of RDNA 5’s features through Project Amethyst, including “Neural Arrays,” “Radiance Cores,” and “Universal Compression”. These technologies, along with next-gen ML-based upscaling and ray regeneration, are set to be key pillars for the upcoming PlayStation 6 and Xbox “Project Helix” consoles.

When Can We Expect RDNA 5?
AMD has not officially announced RDNA 5 Radeon products or confirmed their specifications. Previous reports from AMD board partners point to the next Radeon generation arriving around mid to late 2027, with some partners considering early 2028 as a possibility.
As always with pre-release leaks, a degree of skepticism is warranted—Kepler_L2 hasn’t shared screenshots of the internal materials, and plans can always change. Still, the leak offers an early look at what AMD is aiming for with its next-gen GPU architecture.
