GTA 6 pre-orders are finally live, and to mark the occasion, Rockstar Games has released a stunning gallery of 63 new screenshots. They offer our best look yet at Vice City, showcasing the game’s incredible level of detail, from character models and retro outfits to a variety of vehicles and environments. However, a new analysis from the tech experts at Digital Foundry has poured cold water on the hype, warning that these “jaw-dropping” images might not be representative of what players will actually see on their consoles.

A Visual Showcase
There’s no doubt the screenshots are visually impressive. Digital Foundry notes an “unprecedented level of polish”, with ray-traced reflections taking center stage. Whether it’s the polished steel of Jason’s gun, the wet flooring beneath cars, or the reflective sheen on a car’s hood showing the engine underneath, the game is pushing some serious graphical tech. Even the hair rendering on protagonists Jason and Lucia is highly detailed, showing individual strands.
The Warning
Despite the praise, Digital Foundry’s analysis comes with a significant word of caution. Tech expert Tom Morgan states it is “unlikely” that the screenshots represent real-time results on any platform the game is set to launch on this November.
This includes not just the base PS5 and Xbox Series X, but even the more powerful PS5 Pro. The concern stems from the “pristine image quality,” which suggests a native 4K render (or higher), combined with extensive ray tracing that would be incredibly demanding on current console hardware.
“With such a high level of fidelity on show, then, a question still dangles over which platform is actually being used to generate these shots. To be clear, we find it unlikely that these are real-time results on PS5, Xbox Series X – or in the best case on console, PS5 Pro.” — Tom Morgan, Digital Foundry
Where Did These Screenshots Come From?
If not from the consoles, where did these images originate? Digital Foundry suggests a few possibilities:
- PC Version: The images could be captured from a high-end PC version of the game, which is widely expected to arrive at a later date.
- Development Environment: The screenshots may have been carefully constructed within GTA 6’s development environment, where developers can orchestrate the “perfect shot” with all graphical settings dialled up to 11, without any concern for framerate.
A Familiar Pattern
This is not the first time Rockstar has been accused of using overly polished promotional material. Similar concerns were raised about the visual fidelity of Red Dead Redemption 2‘s pre-release screenshots compared to the final game on base consoles. The practice serves a dual purpose: it creates immense hype while simultaneously showcasing the game’s ultimate visual potential, even if that potential is only achievable on future, more powerful hardware.

What This Means
For now, Digital Foundry’s warning serves as a reminder to manage expectations. While GTA 6 will undoubtedly be a visual powerhouse, the final console experience, especially on the base PS5 and Xbox Series X, may not match the pristine quality of these promotional shots. The true test will come when the game launches on November 19, 2026.
