As anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI continues to build, many players are wondering how well the game will perform on current-gen consoles. However, a former Rockstar Games developer has suggested that GTA 6 may not achieve 60FPS on PlayStation 5.

GTA 6 Performance Concerns on PS5
During an appearance on the Kiwi Talkz podcast, ex-Rockstar animator Mike York shared his thoughts on GTA VI‘s expected performance. When asked about the possibility of the game running at 60 frames per second (FPS) on PlayStation 5, he expressed doubts.
“I don’t know if they’ll be able to pull off 60FPS,” York stated.
Instead, he believes Rockstar will aim for a stable 30FPS, ensuring that performance remains consistent without frame drops.
“I think they’re gonna be shooting for 30FPS – and a locked 30FPS, meaning it never dips below that. They’re gonna try to optimize as much as they can.”
This isn’t entirely surprising given the massive scale of GTA VI. Rockstar is known for creating highly detailed open-world environments, and with GTA VI reportedly featuring a dynamic and densely populated city, achieving a steady frame rate will be a major technical challenge.
Will the PS5 Pro Improve Performance?
With rumors of a PlayStation 5 Pro launching in late 2024, some fans hope that GTA VI could achieve 60FPS on upgraded hardware. However, York remains skeptical.
“I don’t think it’ll get 60FPS raw out the gate on a base console. PS5, for instance. Maybe PS5 Pro, or whatever, but I still don’t think so.”
This suggests that even with hardware enhancements, Rockstar may prioritize graphical fidelity and world complexity over higher frame rates.
Will GTA 6 Run at 60FPS on PC?
For those seeking higher frame rates, the best option may be to wait for the PC version. York noted that once the game arrives on PC, optimization improvements and newer graphics cards could allow GTA VI to run at 60FPS or higher.
“Once it’s on PC, it’ll probably get super optimized and changed and new graphics cards that come out, and you’ll be able to run it at 60FPS probably at that time.”
However, Rockstar has not yet confirmed a PC release date. Based on past trends, the PC version could arrive a year or more after the console launch.
While Rockstar has yet to confirm GTA VI’s performance targets, it’s likely that 30FPS will be the standard on PS5. For players prioritizing higher frame rates, waiting for the PC release—or possibly a PS5 Pro upgrade—could be the best option.
With GTA VI set to launch in Fall 2025, more details about its performance will likely emerge as gameplay previews begin.
