CD Projekt Red has halted production on its upcoming remake of The Witcher to support its other projects that are further along in development.
In a statement delivered to GameSpot, developer Fool’s Theory has put its work on The Witcher Remake on hold while it prioritises The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, which is due out in 2027. Meanwhile, a handful of the team is also supporting development on The Witcher 4, which is set to release in 2028, hence why the remake has been halted for now.
“Fool’s Theory team is focused mainly on the development of The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, while a relatively small part of their team is supporting the development of The Witcher 4.”
“As we have previously announced, the development on The Witcher Remake has been temporarily integrated with The Witcher 4 due to production process dependencies. As The Witcher Remake will be built on the foundation laid by The Witcher 4, we need to have the necessary assets, tools, and pipelines ready for efficient development.”
Why the Remake Was Paused
In an interview published by The Game Business last week, joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski shared some details about the collaboration between CD Projekt Red and Fool’s Theory.
“We started a collaboration with Fool’s Theory. They were supposed to work on The Witcher 1, but we realized that needed a bit more time because of certain technology dependencies with The Witcher 4.”
The reason for this is because CD Projekt Red is moving away from using its proprietary RED Engine to Unreal Engine 5, as was revealed a few years ago. Fool’s Theory is experienced in Unreal Engine, hence why the collaboration makes sense here.
Previously, Fool’s Theory had developed games like The Thaumaturge and Seven, which were both received well by critics and players.
When Will The Witcher Remake Arrive?
It does sound like The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past and The Witcher 4 are the biggest priorities right now, with The Witcher Remake being pushed back until after those are both released.
With The Witcher 4 set to release in 2028, we imagine we won’t see the remake until around 2029 or onwards — which is a long time to wait.

What’s Still Coming
When I saw a hands-off demo of The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past at Gamescom, I felt that it could be the perfect send-off for Geralt.
“For fans, it’ll be bittersweet to see the character in action one last time, but for others, it’ll signify an important change in the way Witcher stories are told, and possibly for the better.”
There hasn’t been a confirmed release date yet for the upcoming expansion, but it will be available in 2027. In the meantime, fans will be able to enjoy The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, which arrives on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 on September 29, 2026.
