As excitement builds for Grand Theft Auto VI and its highly anticipated single-player campaign, new reports suggest that Rockstar Games may take a different approach with its online mode.

GTA 6 Online: A Standalone Experience?
For over a decade, GTA Online has remained one of Rockstar’s most successful live-service games, thanks to its expansive multiplayer world and thriving roleplaying community. However, with the release of GTA VI, Rockstar appears to be making big changes.
According to industry insider Tez2, Rockstar Games may launch GTA 6 Online as a standalone title, meaning players won’t need to own GTA VI to access its online multiplayer experience.
What This Means for Players
If these reports are true, GTA VI Online could be priced separately—possibly around $40—offering more flexibility for those who prefer multiplayer over the single-player campaign. Additionally, Rockstar may release a “complete package” that includes both the base game and online mode for players who want the full experience from day one.
Tez2 explained:
“Rockstar/[Take-Two Interactive] already sells GTAO & RDO separately, but VI will be the first game where online is sold separately at launch, while story mode will be part of the full package that covers both.”
They further speculated that Take-Two Interactive could introduce tiered pricing, where players who purchase GTA 6 Online separately may later have the option to upgrade to the story mode for an additional fee.
Will Rockstar Introduce a Subscription Model?
Another interesting possibility is that Rockstar could leverage its GTA+ subscription service, offering a Game Pass-style model for GTA VI Online players. Instead of purchasing the full game upfront, players might gain access to the single-player story mode through a monthly subscription.
While this remains speculation, it would align with Take-Two’s increasing focus on live-service gaming and long-term revenue models.
Should Fans Expect an Official Announcement Soon?
As with any leak, this information should be taken with caution until Rockstar officially confirms its plans. However, given how successful GTA Online has been, the idea of a standalone GTA 6 Online release isn’t far-fetched.
