AMD’s $899 Flagship Shows Up at $999: 9950X3D2 Pre-Order Pricing Raises Eyebrows
Just days before its official April 22 launch, AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition has appeared on Amazon US with a $999 pre-order price—a full $100 above the $899 MSRP AMD announced just last week.

The listing marks the first time the chip has been available for pre-order in the US, but the pricing is already sparking debate. AMD has not changed its official MSRP, but as Tom’s Hardware notes, the company has “no power over retailer pricing”. It appears that whatever “encouragement” AMD promised for MSRP adherence is not reaching Amazon.
Specs and Positioning
The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is AMD’s first desktop processor with 3D V-Cache on both chiplets. Official specifications include:
- 16 Zen 5 cores, 32 threads
- 4.3 GHz base clock, up to 5.6 GHz boost
- 192 MB L3 cache (208 MB total with L2)
- 200W default TDP
- AM5 socket compatibility
The chip is positioned as a content creation and workstation powerhouse, with AMD claiming 5% to 13% performance gains over the standard 9950X3D in professional workloads.

Other Retailers Remain Quiet
Newegg and B&H Photo Video have also listed the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, but neither has enabled pre-orders or posted a live price yet. That suggests retailer pages are going live ahead of launch, but not all stores have activated ordering. The $999 Amazon price may be a placeholder—or it may be what early adopters will actually pay.

A Concerning Trend
If $999 holds, the 9950X3D2 would become one of AMD’s most expensive mainstream desktop processors to date. The standard 9950X3D launched at $699 and currently sells for around $675 on Amazon. A $300 premium for dual cache is steep, even for a halo product.
AMD has not commented on the Amazon listing. For now, buyers who want the dual-cache flagship can pre-order at $999—or wait to see if launch day brings more competitive pricing.
