Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Players Warned About Bug Which Wipes Hours of Progress

The Assassin’s Creed series features some of the biggest and most in-depth virtual worlds you’ll ever experience, but with that comes the caveat that you’ll often spend hundreds of hours playing through them. With Black Flag Resynced being the most recent release, one particularly nasty glitch has the potential to wipe out hours of progress from your save file.

The Bug: Templar Hunt Side Quests Can Softlock Your Save

The bug was first shared by Game File’s Stephen Totilo (via GamesRadar), who reports that Templar Hunt side quests may leave players losing hours of their save file if they leave them unfinished.

“If you’re playing Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, do not leave any Templar Hunt sidequest chains unfinished. It produced a glitch that cost me five hours of playing time.” — Stephen Totilo, Game File

Adding specifics in a follow-up post, Totilo explains that he was “several quests into the Templar Hunt in Kingston, had left the region to play other parts. Eventually triggered a main story mission in Kingston (‘Imagine my Surprise’). The TH chain and main quest blocked each other. Couldn’t progress.”

PSA: If you're playing Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, do not leave any Templar Hunt sidequest chains unfinished. It produced a glitch that cost me five hours of playing time. The game's really fun and some of the new bits are interesting in unexpected ways. But my write-up is delayed!

How the Bug Works

The issue occurs when you start a Templar Hunt side quest chain but don’t finish it before progressing with the main story. The two questlines can end up blocking each other, softlocking your game and forcing you to reload an earlier save — potentially losing hours of progress.

Templar Hunts are missions in which you can collect a series of keys that will allow you to unlock the desirable Templar Armor set for Edward, one of the most powerful armours in the game. There are four quests in the game which allow you to unlock these keys, which must be played in order. Once you’ve collected all the keys, you’ll be able to unlock the armour and claim it for yourself.

The first of these quests is called This Old Cove, which occurs at the beginning of Sequence 4.

How to Avoid the Bug

The best way to avoid this bug is to complete each Templar Hunt side quest as you receive it, rather than leaving it unfinished while you explore other regions. Do not start a Templar Hunt and then leave the region to do other content — finish the entire chain first.

If you’re already partway through a Templar Hunt and have left the region, it’s advisable to return and complete it before progressing the main story.

Ubisoft Is Aware and Working on a Fix

The good news is that Ubisoft has identified the bug and confirmed that it will be fixed as part of a future update. However, there is no confirmed date for when that patch will go live.

Until then, treat the Templar Hunt quests with caution. If you’re concerned about losing progress, you may want to avoid starting them altogether until the patch arrives — or at least ensure you finish them in one sitting.

A Love Letter to Fans — Despite the Glitch

In GAMINGbible’s Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced review, we said that Ubisoft has “clearly gone to great lengths to ensure that this remake deserves to exist, and it’s very clear after spending many hours with the game that it’s a love letter to the fans and the developers.”

While this bug is certainly frustrating, it doesn’t diminish the overall quality of the remake. With Ubisoft already working on a fix, players should be able to enjoy the full pirate experience without fear of losing their progress soon.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
