With the release of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced just around the corner on July 9, 2026, we’ve gone hands‑on with an early build. The remake of the beloved 2013 pirate adventure is shaping up to be a significant upgrade. While the core identity remains intact (it’s not an RPG, thank goodness), Ubisoft has introduced a host of smart improvements. Here are the nine biggest changes we’re most excited about.

1. Gorgeous Visuals and Smooth Performance
The most immediately noticeable change is the visual overhaul. Powered by a modern version of Ubisoft’s Anvil Engine, the Caribbean’s colors and shine pop like never before. Textures on characters and environments are on par with Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The preview ran at a smooth 60fps on a gaming PC, with only occasional dips – kinks that will likely be ironed out by launch.
2. Stealth That Actually Works
The original Black Flag had frustrating stealth: no free crouch button, and being spotted meant an instant mission failure. In Resynced, you can crouch freely at any time. Even better, if an NPC spots you during a tailing mission, you’re drawn into combat instead of restarting the checkpoint. There’s also a stealth meter (similar to Splinter Cell) that shows how hidden you are in darkness.
3. Smooth, Modern Parkour
Parkour in older Assassin’s Creed games could feel clunky. The remake introduces smoother wall climbing, wall running, and traversal over objects. You can now leap backwards and sideways when climbing structures – a small change that makes chase sequences much more dynamic. (These basic moves were oddly missing from Shadows at launch, so it’s good to see them here.)
4. Pets on the Jackdaw
You can now adopt a monkey or a cat to roam your ship. While we didn’t see what abilities they bring (if any), their cuteness alone is reason enough to set sail with a furry first mate.
5. Underwater Exploration Anywhere
No longer restricted to designated diving spots. You can anchor the Jackdaw anywhere and dive beneath the waves to hunt for treasure. But beware: sharks in the remake are more deadly and intelligent than ever.
6. A Faithful Action‑Adventure, Not an RPG
Unlike the recent trilogy (Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla), Resynced does not force RPG mechanics. There are no level gates, no gear score, no damage sponges. It remains a classic action‑adventure – exactly what fans of the original wanted.
7. Reworked Naval Combat and Exploration
While not detailed in the preview, early reports indicate that naval combat has been refined with smoother controls and more dynamic weather. The Jackdaw’s upgrades now have a more meaningful impact on how you engage enemy vessels.
8. Expanded Side Content
New side characters have their own storylines, and completing their quests unlocks powerful upgrades for the Jackdaw. This adds depth without overwhelming the main campaign.

9. The Original Game Remains Available
Perhaps the most considerate change: Ubisoft has confirmed that the original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will not be delisted. Players who prefer the original’s multiplayer or Freedom Cry DLC can still purchase and play it. Resynced is a complementary, modernized take, not a replacement.
