GTA 6 may feature one less playable character than Grand Theft Auto V, but the relationship between its two leads feels like a character in itself.

Jason and Lucia are the faces of the next Grand Theft Auto game and take on roles akin to those of the real-life criminals Bonnie and Clyde. We’ve seen plenty of them in trailers alone, and you can tell their relationship is quite strong — for now.
GTA 6’s Jason And Lucia Will Only Be As Strong As The Player Makes Them
Rockstar Games is yet to drop any raw, unedited gameplay, but from what we’ve seen so far, GTA VI looks like an amalgamation of GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. It’ll presumably share a lot of the same gameplay mechanics, and it’s rumoured that Red Dead Redemption 2‘s honour system will return as well — this time as a relationship meter.
This meter would show the strength or fragility of Jason and Lucia’s relationship, with player choices impacting it. The system has been compared to a “ride-or-die meter” or a “loyalty mechanic”, where your actions determine the state of your relationship, which in turn shifts how the story plays out.
The “Punished For Cheating” Theory
Would-be players think their trials and tribulations will run deeper than that, however, believing your “interactions” with other NPCs will change the way they perceive each other.
The latest burst of excitement came after a post on the GTA 6 subreddit, where user TXNOGG bluntly asked whether gooners — as thirsty fans jokingly call themselves — will face penalties for cheating on Lucia in GTA 6, or whether Rockstar will keep things “more of an open type thing”.
The question resonated because GTA has always encouraged players to push the boundaries of sex, violence and everything in between with very few personal consequences for its leads. In GTA V, Michael, Franklin and Trevor could visit strip clubs or pay for sex workers without seeing their friendships implode or major story beats change. The game occasionally nudged back with a guilty line of dialogue or an angry text from a spouse, but the core narrative rolled on unaffected.
GTA 6 looks different. From the first trailer, Rockstar has framed Jason and Lucia as partners in crime and romance, a couple whose survival seems to depend on co-operation.
How A GTA 6 Relationship Meter Could Work
Under this logic, hours spent in Vice City’s strip clubs, or hiring sex workers while Lucia is nominally your partner, could steadily erode the bond between the duo. Spend too long gooning around and the game might not just tut in the background — it could change dialogue, mission availability or even the ending.
It could also affect how the pair work together in missions. As noted by one fan, the system could track whether you are “madly in love or like only working together,” with joint activities, dates or canceled meetings reflected in the dynamics of the relationship.
What This Could Mean For The Ending
The Romantic/Pragmatic meter is likely linked to the relationship between Lucia and Jason, and the actions of the player will determine whether they have a romantic relationship where they are actually in love with each other or a pragmatic relationship where they are mostly just partners in crime, working together to survive but nothing beyond that.
If the relationship meter works as rumoured, it could lead to different endings for the pair:
- Romantic & Cool → Jason and Lucia survive and stay together
- Romantic & Chaotic → Lucia dies, Jason lives with guilt
- Pragmatic & Cool → Both survive but go separate ways
- Pragmatic & Chaotic → Lucia kills Jason and lives a wealthy but lonely life
It’s possible that the romantic path will provide the best endings, regardless of being “Romantic Cool” or “Romantic Chaotic”.
The Undercover Cop Theory
Making things even more complicated is the popular fan theory that Jason is actually an undercover cop. This is based on a few clues from the trailers — a prison guard seems to recognise him, and a cop says “cops stick together” before cutting to Jason. If true, this would have huge implications for their relationship, forcing Jason to choose between his duty and his loyalty to Lucia. Some believe this could lead to a major twist where one of them flips on the other.

A Warning For Gooners
Whether the relationship system is real or just speculation remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: players who treat Vice City as their personal playground for infidelity might find that their actions have consequences — and the price of a good time could be a broken partnership, a harder playthrough, or even a tragic ending.
Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The PC port has yet to be announced.
