It appears that GTA 6 may indeed feature a 60 FPS graphical mode, following doubts that the game might not be able to hit that target due to its advanced technology.

What the Insider Claims
On the Polish podcast Rock and Borys, hosts Borys Nieśpielak and Remigiusz Maciaszek claim that GTA 6 will have a 60 FPS mode, following previous reports that the game will have two graphics modes.
At around the 30:20 mark of the podcast, Nieśpielak claims that a Rockstar source has provided them with confirmation that two graphics modes will be available in the game, both having a different framerate target.
“Based on the information I’ve received, there are supposed to be two graphics modes: 30 and 60 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X,” Nieśpielak says.
He then claimed that on Xbox Series S, the performance target is “30 FPS for now,” but adds that “they are actively working on it, collaborating with a large team from Microsoft, so there might be more.”
As for why Rockstar hasn’t announced the performance targets for Grand Theft Auto VI yet, Nieśpielak says it may be because it’s “highly anticipated information” – and because Rockstar isn’t 100% certain yet whether the 60 FPS mode will be available at launch. There is a possibility it might arrive in a later patch.
Prior to this, Rock and Borys had reported that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt would be getting a third expansion, which was later revealed to be the Songs of the Past expansion. So, the podcast does have some credibility when it comes to this kind of information.
The Skeptics: Digital Foundry Weighs In
However, considering the advanced technology that Rockstar Games seems to be using for Grand Theft Auto VI, seen in the game’s first two trailers, some fans have doubted whether Rockstar will be able to push consoles to accommodate a 60 FPS target.
The tech experts at Digital Foundry have poured cold water on the speculation. They’ve said there’s nothing they’ve seen of GTA 6 so far – including the recently released screenshots and brief video clips – that suggests a 60 FPS mode is possible on the current generation of consoles.
“Unfortunately, the level of detail evident in the trailer, pre-order screenshots and other, more recent footage seems extremely challenging to scale down in a way that allows for a 60fps mode,” DF’s Will Judd said.
That assessment is based on the established demands that games heavy on simulation have on the CPUs of the nearly six-year-old consoles. DF describes GTA 6‘s world as “another level of magnitude more challenging than the likes of Dragon’s Dogma 2 or Baldur’s Gate 3.”
Even the more powerful PS5 Pro would struggle to output GTA 6 at 60 FPS, DF suggests, because it only offers “a fractional CPU performance bump” over base PS5. The Pro is more about improved Ray Tracing and support for PSSR upscaling than it is higher framerate.
At best, DF suggests a 40 FPS mode could be possible on PS5 Pro for displays with 120Hz support, but again, that’s unconfirmed for now.
Rockstar’s Historical Precedent
It’s also worth noting Rockstar’s own release history suggests 60 FPS isn’t happening for GTA 6. GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 all launched at 30 FPS on console, with the focus on fidelity over framerate. The developer just doesn’t tend to release games built around delivering 60 FPS.
What This Means for Players
| Console | Reported Performance |
|---|---|
| PS5 / Xbox Series X | 30 FPS Quality Mode / 60 FPS Performance Mode (target) |
| PS5 Pro | 40 FPS mode possible; 60 FPS uncertain |
| Xbox Series S | 30 FPS (currently) – Rockstar working with Microsoft to improve |
Fan Reactions
On Reddit, many comments are sceptical about claims that the game will hit 60 frames per second.
“I won’t believe this until it’s confirmed by Rockstar themselves,” reads one comment.
“Anyone else hoping for a 40FPS mode with 120hz VRR displays? It’s pretty great stuff. You almost get the fluidity of 60FPS, and retain resolution/graphical settings,” reads another.
“I think the thing I’m most excited about with this game is the tech stuff. Rockstar have always pulled off the most impressive stuff in open world games, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how this game looks and all the weird little details they can cram into it.”
Some fans have even joked that if base consoles can run GTA 6 at 60 FPS, Rockstar “must have used black magic or a ritual sacrifice.”
The Bottom Line
60 FPS stands for “60 frames per second,” and is a measure of how many consecutive images are shown on a digital display within a single second. In video games, the standard has often been for games to either feature 30 FPS or 60 FPS, with the latter being preferable due to the motion being smoother and visuals being crisper.

The truth likely lies somewhere in between. Rockstar is reportedly working on a 60 FPS mode, but they may not be able to deliver it in time for launch. Even if it does arrive, it will almost certainly come with significant visual compromises – lower resolution, reduced NPC density, or scaled-back ray tracing.
Until Rockstar makes an official announcement, the debate will continue. The third trailer, expected to showcase raw gameplay, may finally provide the answer.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
