Another 16-Pin Meltdown, This Time on a $16,000 Professional GPU
The ongoing saga of 16-pin power connector failures has claimed another victim, and this time the card involved costs as much as a new car. An ASRock NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition—a 96GB professional GPU with an estimated value of around $16,000—was involved in a connector failure that melted the cable into the power supply socket.

The system was brought to a repair shop with the RTX PRO 6000 connected to an ASRock Taichi TC-1650T 1650W power supply. According to the report, both ends of the 12V-2×6 cable were fully inserted before the failure occurred. The connector failed catastrophically, melting into the PSU socket. Fortunately, the graphics card itself survived the incident.
The Thermal Protection That Didn’t Protect
What makes this case particularly concerning is that the ASRock Taichi TC-1650T is equipped with the company’s TempGuard feature. This technology includes an NTC temperature sensor located at the VGA connector, designed to monitor temperatures and signal the power supply to shut down if they rise beyond the safe operating range.
According to ASRock’s marketing materials and independent reviews, this thermal protection should have prevented exactly this kind of failure. However, the post claims the protection did not react before the connector melted. The sensor apparently monitored only the GPU side of the cable, leaving the PSU side unprotected.
This design flaw becomes obvious in hindsight: if the sensor had been placed on both ends of the cable, the failure could likely have been prevented. Instead, the PSU-side connector bore the brunt of the damage.
Not the First Incident with This Hardware Combination
This is not the first time an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell has been involved in a 16-pin cable failure with the same ASRock power supply model. In March, another owner reported that the 12V-2×6 cable from an ASRock Taichi TC-1650T became scorched on the GPU side. In that case, PNY inspected the card and returned it because it remained functional, while ASRock replaced the damaged cable. That incident did not include photos, which is why it was never widely reported.
The RTX PRO 6000’s Power Profile
The RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition is NVIDIA’s flagship professional card, featuring 96GB of GDDR7 ECC memory and a 600W total board power rating. It uses a single PCIe CEM5 16-pin power connector—the same connector that has been the source of countless melting reports across both consumer and professional GPU lines.
While the RTX PRO 6000 is designed for AI, rendering, and scientific computing workloads rather than gaming, its power delivery requirements are just as demanding as the GeForce RTX 5090. That puts it at the same risk of connector failure, as this incident demonstrates.

This case highlights a critical gap in the current approach to 16-pin connector safety. Thermal monitoring at a single point on the cable is insufficient when the failure can occur at either end. For owners of high-power GPUs—whether consumer or professional—the incident is a reminder that even premium power supplies with built-in safeguards may not be enough.
Until the industry adopts more robust connector designs or implements comprehensive monitoring on both ends of the cable, these failures are likely to continue. For now, the $16,000 RTX PRO 6000 lives to compute another day, but the same cannot be said for the cable or the PSU socket it melted into.
