GTA 6 Pre-Order Update Is A Devastating Blow To Physical Media Gamers

Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders are set to open in just a few hours. Ahead of that, Rockstar Games has confirmed a caveat regarding physical versions of the game – and this is likely going to upset many longtime fans.

GTA 6 will be available to order both digitally and physically but, unfortunately, physical copies will only contain a code in a box and will not actually include a disc version of the game.

“The physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI, containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12 to support pre-loading.” – Rockstar Games press release

This has become a popular trend in recent years, but it somewhat makes purchasing a physical copy obsolete. In fact, the only benefit to purchasing a code in a box is that you get the box to display on your shelf. As one Reddit user put it, “So we’re paying full price for an empty box now? Crazy times”.

“It’s Not Really a Physical Version”

For all intents and purposes, the physical box is essentially not a physical version of the game at all. Some retailers are even refusing to stock it over the decision, with critics arguing that without a disc, “ownership” of the game is meaningless.

Physical discs, like those that the original GTA: Vice City arrived on, are a dying breed, and that’s something we should be concerned about. When it comes to games being delisted or revoked, those with a physical copy are in a much safer position. In many cases, digital copies include small print to make clear that you don’t actually own the software at all.

A Precedent for the Industry

It’s admittedly unlikely that a game as high-profile as GTA 6 is going to have any issues regarding preservation further down the line. But if a game as well-funded and high-profile as GTA 6 isn’t willing to provide actual disc copies, it sets a precedent in the industry. More and more publishers will cut corners and eventually, real disc copies will cease to exist.

Some have suggested the move is a security measure from Rockstar to prevent leaks and control access to the game ahead of launch. However, for collectors who value physical media, the reasoning offers little comfort.

Despite No Disc, Pre-Loading Is Available

Alongside this disappointing news, Rockstar did confirm that GTA VI will be available for pre-load starting from 12 November 2026. That means gamers have around eight days to get GTA VI loaded up on their consoles, ready to dive in immediately on launch day. Digital pre-orders will also be able to begin pre-loading at the same time.

If you’re itching to pre-order the game, orders open at midnight local time on 25 June – and you’ll be able to get your hands on both digital and physical versions.

Ultimate Edition And Pre-Order Bonuses Confirmed

Rockstar has confirmed the existence of Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition. This edition bundles GTA VI with exclusive premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and additional content threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story.

Beyond that, all players who pre-order or purchase GTA VI before 20 November will secure the Vintage Vice City Pack. This collection features 80s-themed items that flash back to when the neon burned brightest – including retro outfits, hairstyles, vehicles, and Tommy Vercetti-style weapons.

When You’ll Get Your Bonuses

Physical copies containing the Vintage Vice City Pack will be available “while stocks last”, but all digital orders will include the bonus. The pack won’t be available immediately to players, but will be delivered at a later date.

The Bottom Line

Rockstar’s decision to ship GTA VI physical editions as code-in-a-box represents a significant moment for the games industry. For collectors, it’s a devastating blow. For the industry, it may signal the beginning of the end for physical discs.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC version has not yet been announced.
