Capcom’s experiments with multiplayer in the Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil series have been a mixed bag. Resident Evil 5 is great fun with a friend — but only with a friend. And Resident Evil 6? Best left unmentioned. Now, a dedicated fan has taken matters into their own hands, delivering what Capcom never officially did: a fully functional co-op mod for the acclaimed Resident Evil 4 remake.

Two Leons Are Better Than One
Modder claybtv has released a free multiplayer mod for Resident Evil 4 (2023) on NexusMods, and it’s already turning heads. In this surreal “what if” scenario, Leon Kennedy has apparently cloned himself so he never has to face the horrors of survival horror alone. The second Leon is controlled by your co-op partner via online multiplayer — and judging from early gameplay footage, the experience is surprisingly smooth.
The mod “maintains synchronisation of enemies, story events, doors, switches, alarms, and many other elements between both players’ machines,” according to the mod’s description. Given that Resident Evil 4 was originally designed as a single-player experience, achieving this level of synchronisation is a “highly complex technical challenge” — one that claybtv appears to have overcome impressively.
A Beta With Big Potential
The mod is available now and free to download, but it’s important to note that it’s currently in beta. You won’t be able to play through the entire game in co-op just yet — there’s a point where progress stops for two players. However, the early implementation is already impressive, and any feedback from players will undoubtedly help claybtv refine the project.
The modder has also noted that while the project is non-profit, development and server costs are significant. Donations are welcome for those who wish to support the work.

What This Means for the Future
Capcom has yet to officially confirm a Resident Evil 5 remake, but it’s heavily implied one is in the works. The end of Resident Evil 4‘s Separate Ways DLC hinted at it, and with Resident Evil: Code Veronica‘s expanded story already confirmed, Easter eggs are almost certain.
While claybtv’s mod isn’t an official Capcom project, it proves one thing beyond doubt: a co-op Resident Evil 4 experience absolutely works. And for PC players willing to dive into the beta, it’s a thrilling preview of what could be.
Resident Evil 4 (2023) is available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. The multiplayer mod is exclusive to PC via NexusMods.
