A first look at the PlayStation 5 case for Grand Theft Auto VI has revealed what players will actually get inside.
Two months away from the release of GTA 6, buyers have been aware of the game’s digital-only requirements since June, but that hasn’t stopped fan outcry against Rockstar for the decision. Boxed copies of Grand Theft Auto VI are planned in addition to digital, but without discs we’re just not sure what exactly is included inside the box.
Thankfully, a new leak has shared a first look at what boxed copies of Grand Theft Auto VI actually include, as well as the artwork and information that appears on the front and back.
X user GTA 6 Countdown — an account dedicated to aggregating all news regarding Rockstar — has shared the leaked images of the box, which has apparently been sent to “multiple stores” recently. The images show both the front and back of a boxed copy of GTA VI for PlayStation 5.
What’s in the Box?
The front of the box has the design already released by Rockstar earlier this year, depicting the famous multi-panel display of artwork of various characters and vehicles from the game. It also says, “Game box will contain digital download code. No disc included,” confirming that there won’t be a disc inside for you to play.
What’s interesting is that it also doesn’t reference a map being included in the box, which has been a staple of Grand Theft Auto physical releases since GTA 3 released in 2001. For collectors who have come to expect a fold-out map of the game’s world, this omission is notable.
The description of the game on the back of the box reads: “VICE CITY, USA. Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”
This Probably Isn’t the Final Box Art
It’s worth noting that this probably isn’t the final design of GTA 6’s box art. The massive date on the front saying “pre-order now” should give that away. The back of the case is also a lot emptier than I would have expected.
What’s more likely is that this will be the box for retailers to put on shelves promoting GTA VI pre-orders, so they can start advertising to shoppers that they’re able to purchase the game in-store. The back of the box also encourages players to order before November 19, 2026 in order to access the Vintage Vice City Pack, which is available with all pre-orders of the game on Xbox and PlayStation.

The Ongoing Physical Media Controversy
The leak adds fuel to the ongoing debate over Rockstar’s decision to release GTA VI without a physical disc. While some retailers have refused to stock the “code-in-a-box” versions, others have accepted it as an industry-wide trend. Fans hoping for a traditional physical release — complete with a disc and collectible map — appear to be out of luck.
