A new debate has sparked within the gaming industry over the potential price of GTA 6. While some reports have suggested the game could launch at $80 or even $100, a leading analyst has pushed back, calling the idea unrealistic and unnecessary.
Could GTA 6 Break the $100 Price Barrier?
The discussion began after industry expert Matthew Ball released his 2025 State of Video Gaming report. In it, he speculated that Grand Theft Auto VI could come with a steeper price tag than previous games, stating:
“There is hope that Take-Two will price GTA VI at $80 or even $100, thereby breaking a key price barrier and enabling the rest of the market to move up, too.”
Ball justified this possibility by pointing out that game development costs have reached all-time highs, while standard retail prices have remained relatively stable. However, this claim was met with strong opposition from both gamers and industry analysts.
Industry Expert Calls $100 GTA 6 Price “Ridiculous”
Mat Piscatella, executive director and video game industry analyst at Circana, is among those rejecting the idea of a $100 base price. In a post on Bluesky, he dismissed the suggestion, arguing that such a move would be unnecessary and could hurt sales.
“There’s no need to make the base price of any game $100,” Piscatella stated. “Special editions, collector’s editions, gold/silver editions, etc., do the same thing, and a high percentage of day-one buyers already opt for these higher-priced versions. There’s just no need.”
He further emphasized that a higher price point would be counterproductive for Rockstar Games:
“You want to make the funnel as wide as possible while also optimizing launch… It just makes no sense. At all.”
What Does This Mean for GTA 6’s Price?
While many players expect GTA VI to be one of the most expensive games ever produced, the idea of a $100 base price still seems far-fetched. Standard editions of major AAA titles typically launch at $69.99, and Rockstar is likely to maximize revenue through special and deluxe editions instead.
That said, if GTA VI does see a price increase, fans may want to think twice before accepting it. Higher prices today could set a precedent for even steeper price hikes in the future.
