A Familiar Failure Returns
The Ryzen 7 7800X3D has reportedly suffered another catastrophic failure—this time on a motherboard running the latest available BIOS. A Reddit user reported that their system shut down while gaming after about three months of use, then entered a boot loop. The damaged CPU was paired with an MSI PRO X870-P WIFI motherboard, which also stopped working.

According to the owner, there was no manual CPU tuning, undervolting, or overclocking. EXPO was the only BIOS setting changed, while a 360mm AIO handled cooling. Temperatures had appeared normal before the failure.
A Blast from the Past: The 2023 Ryzen 7000 Burning Issue
The swollen package is all too familiar from the Ryzen 7000 failures reported in 2023. At the time, AMD identified operation outside specification limits as the cause and distributed new AGESA firmware that capped SoC voltage at 1.30V. AMD specifically recommended updating AM5 motherboard BIOSes while keeping EXPO and PBO support available.
That was supposed to close the book on the issue. But similar swelling and boot-loop cases kept surfacing around the 9800X3D launch in late 2024. By mid-2025, AMD pointed the finger at motherboard vendors, saying some ODM BIOSes simply ignored its recommended voltage and current limits. ASRock later admitted its aggressive PBO defaults played a role in several failures.
Why This Case Stands Out
What makes this report different is that the system was running the latest available BIOS—yet the CPU still suffered the same kind of damage. The MSI PRO X870-P WIFI is a relatively recent AM5 board, and the failure occurred despite AMD’s voltage safeguards being in place.
The user had previously delidded the CPU, which may complicate the warranty situation. However, the board also stopped working, suggesting the failure wasn’t limited to the processor alone.
