AMD’s AI Powerhouse: Instinct MI455X Takes on NVIDIA Rubin
AMD has officially unveiled its next-generation data center GPU, the AMD Instinct MI455X, at its Advancing AI 2026 event. Built on the new CDNA 5 architecture, this accelerator is designed to power the most demanding AI workloads, from large-scale training to inference. With its massive memory capacity and unprecedented bandwidth, the MI455X positions AMD as a formidable challenger to NVIDIA’s upcoming Rubin platform.

Raw Power: 320 Billion Transistors and 432GB HBM4
The MI455X is a marvel of modern semiconductor engineering. It integrates a staggering 320 billion transistors using a mix of TSMC’s most advanced nodes: 2nm for the compute dies and 3nm for the fabric and I/O dies. This complex heterogeneous integration is made possible through advanced packaging technologies.
The GPU features 432GB of HBM4 memory organized across 12 stacks. This represents a 50% increase over the 288GB found in its predecessor, the MI355X, and surpasses the 288GB rumored for NVIDIA’s Rubin chip. The memory system delivers a peak bandwidth of 23.3 TB/s, which is approximately 2.9 times higher than the MI355X.
CDNA 5 Architecture and AI Compute
The CDNA 5 architecture introduces a new Tensor Data Mover, which enables asynchronous data transfers between global memory and local data storage. This, along with features like work-group clustering, multicast transfers, data prefetching, and a new command processor, is designed to reduce latency and improve data movement efficiency.
These architectural improvements translate into immense compute power. The MI455X delivers 20.13 PFLOPS of peak MXFP8 and MXFP6 performance, and up to 40.26 PFLOPS in MXFP4. This positions it as a powerhouse for training and running the largest AI models.
Helios: AI at Rack Scale
The MI455X is the engine behind AMD’s new Helios rackscale solution. Helios integrates up to 72 MI455X GPUs into a single, unified coherent domain. This architecture, designed to compete directly with NVIDIA’s NVL72, pools the massive memory capacity of all 72 GPUs, creating an enormous memory pool for handling the most demanding AI workloads.
Instinct MI430X: A Focus on HPC
Alongside the MI455X, AMD also announced the Instinct MI430X, a GPU specifically designed for high-performance computing (HPC) and scientific simulations. While it shares the CDNA 5 architecture, its strength lies in FP64 double-precision performance, delivering up to 288 TFLOPS. This makes it a compelling choice for sovereign AI initiatives and workloads that require high precision for complex modeling and simulations.
