What began as a week-long protest against Sony’s decision to phase out physical game discs has now escalated into an indefinite blackout, putting some of the year’s biggest releases — including Grand Theft Auto VI — at risk for participating gamers.

From One Week to Indefinite
The protest, known as the #PSBlackout, was originally scheduled to run from August 23 to August 30. However, the campaign’s leaders at Does It Play? — a group dedicated to game preservation — have now extended the boycott indefinitely.
In an updated statement, the group declared: “Everyone is encouraged to go indefinitely until Sony change course. Pedal to the metal or we won’t get anywhere!” The originally mentioned window is now described as merely “a minimum requirement”.
Why Gamers Are Protesting
The core grievance is Sony’s announcement that it will cease manufacturing physical game discs for new PlayStation releases starting in January 2028. This effectively signals a digital-only future for PlayStation consoles.
Protesters argue that the decision eliminates consumers’ ability to trade, sell, or lend games. Digital purchases, they point out, only grant a license that can be revoked at any time— a fear reinforced when Sony removed hundreds of movies from PS5 libraries earlier this year.
More than 345,000 people have signed a petition called “Don’t Kill the Disc”. The UK’s Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA) called Sony’s decision “a triumph of corporate convenience over consumer choice”.
What PlayStation 5 Gamers Will Miss
The indefinite blackout comes at a critical time for PlayStation. Major upcoming PS5 releases include:
- Marvel’s Wolverine – September 15
- Grand Theft Auto VI – November 19
- Control Resonant
- Onimusha: Way of the Sword
- The Blood of Dawnwalker
Under the protest rules, participants must keep their consoles unplugged, avoid any logins, and refrain from any purchases through the PlayStation Store.
Sony’s Response: “No Impact on Our Business”
Sony has shown no signs of backing down. CFO Lin Tao told investors: “We are not seeing any impact on our business as of now”. “As a result of the discontinuation of discs, we don’t see that there will be any negative impact on our business”.
The company’s latest financials show an 82% digital download ratio for full game software across PS4 and PS5. In the U.S., only seven PlayStation games have sold more than 100,000 physical copies so far this year.
Tao acknowledged that “users, the players, have attachments,” but added that Sony must “think about how to respond to those feedbacks”— not necessarily by reversing course.
Will the Boycott Succeed?
Opinions are divided. Critics argue that asking millions of gamers to stay offline indefinitely is unrealistic. “Indefinite strikes only work if the community is united — and let’s be honest, the gaming community rarely is”.
Others point out that physical games now account for just 28% of console game sales in France — one of the strongest markets for discs — and on PC, physical media has been virtually extinct for over a decade.

Nevertheless, the protest has already made an impact: Sony’s social media posts continue to be flooded with criticism, and the issue has overshadowed the marketing of new games. Sony’s stock actually leaped by around 3.2% after the disc announcement, suggesting investors see the digital shift as a positive move.
With GTA 6 — one of the most anticipated games in history — just months away, the true test of the blackout’s effectiveness will come when players must choose between their principles and the biggest release of the decade.
