The Witcher multiplayer spin-off, codenamed Project Sirius, has been hit by another round of layoffs, raising fresh concerns about the project’s future.
CD Projekt Red confirmed to IGN that nine staff working on the game have been cut — four from its Boston office and five from its Warsaw headquarters. An additional nine employees have been invited to internal recruitment processes for potential roles on other CD Projekt Red projects.
“We adjusted the size of the Sirius team to reflect the project’s needs at this stage of development,” a CD Projekt Red representative said in a statement.
A Project in Constant Flux
Project Sirius was first announced in 2022 as an “innovative” take on universe, described as a story-driven co-op multiplayer project with both single-player and multiplayer elements. It is being developed by The Molasses Flood, a Boston-based studio CD Projekt Red acquired in 2021.
However, the project has faced repeated difficulties:
- 2023: Project Sirius was rebooted under a “new framework,” resulting in 29 developers being laid off.
- 2025: The Molasses Flood was fully absorbed into CD Projekt Red, ending its independent identity.
- August 2026: Another round of layoffs cuts the team from 83 to roughly 65 developers.
Nearly four years after its announcement, CD Projekt Red has yet to show anything of the game.
CDPR’s Ambitious Roadmap
The layoffs come as CD Projekt Red is juggling an increasingly crowded slate of projects:
- The Witcher 4 (513 staff) — the next mainline entry and start of a new trilogy
- Cyberpunk 2 (163 staff)
- The Witcher 1 Remake
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past expansion (2027)
- New IP Project Hadar (24 staff)
CD Projekt Red has ambitious plans to launch The Witcher 4, 5, and 6 within a six-year period. This roadmap essentially rules out expansions for The Witcher 4.

What This Means for Project Sirius
There is no suggestion that Project Sirius has been cancelled. However, with the bulk of CD Projekt Red’s resources directed toward The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2, the multiplayer spin-off appears to be taking a back seat.
The project’s future remains uncertain. As one outlet put it: “Another staffing cut has hit a rebooted Witcher multiplayer spin-off with an uncertain future, and the project still has a long way to go before it can prove itself”.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Songs of the Past arrives in 2027. The Witcher 4 is expected in late 2028 or 2029.
