The Witcher 3’s upcoming Songs of the Past story expansion is officially getting its first trailer on August 25. Geoff Keighley, the well-known creator and host of both The Game Awards and Summer Game Fest, has confirmed that the expansion will be shown during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026.
A Surprise Expansion After 11 Years
Released all the way back in May 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is widely considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time. Its overarching narrative, character relationships, side quests, and presentation are still heavily praised over a decade after launch. Now, 11 years after release, The Witcher 3 is receiving one last story expansion. Announced in May 2026, Songs of the Past was revealed in a surprise announcement that delighted fans worldwide. The expansion is being co-developed by CD Projekt Red and Fool’s Theory, the studio also working on the remake of the original The Witcher.
What We Know So Far
Since its announcement, CD Projekt Red and Fool’s Theory have remained extremely tight-lipped regarding plot details or possible gameplay additions. One of the only details confirmed is that Songs of the Past will be an expansion around the same size as Blood and Wine — which itself added around 40 hours of new content to the already-massive RPG.
In this liminal space between the expansion’s announcement and its upcoming Gamescom trailer, fans have been deriving clues from the official key art. Based solely on the poster, fans have theorised that the expansion will focus on Geralt and Ciri’s relationship, as Geralt seems to be holding Ciri’s silver sword.
