GTA 6 Disc Editions Hopes Crushed By Rockstar Source – No Physical Disc, Not Even Months After Launch

GTA 6 fans hoping for a physical disc to play on may not get their wish granted, as a new update from Rockstar confirms there will be no disc edition available – not at launch, and not in the months after.

A Controversial Pre-Order Announcement

When Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders were revealed last week, one particular detail became a huge source of controversy: Rockstar Games was not selling a true physical edition of the game. While you can buy boxed copies of Grand Theft Auto VI, your purchase will simply result in you receiving a box with a code to redeem the game on your platform of choice. The physical edition is a code-in-a-box only, meaning you’ll need to download the full game using a code after buying the retail box.

This led to a mass outcry, with some retailers boycotting selling the game due to the lack of a true physical edition.

The Support Email That Gave False Hope

Towards the end of the week, fans claimed that an email from Rockstar Support suggested that disc copies of the game would be available after GTA 6‘s launch date of November 19, 2026.

“You will be able to acquire a physical copy during the following months,” read the email from Rockstar Support, which led many to believe that disc copies would become available post-November.

The email was legitimate – it was a genuine response to a ticket filed to Rockstar Support asking for a disc version of GTA 6. However, the response was poorly worded and did not announce any change in policy, nor confirm a disc release was in the works.

The Clarification: “No Plans” for Discs

The Hollywood Reporter reached out to a Rockstar source, who said that “the language is being misinterpreted by a hopeful internet”.

THR added that “at this point in time, there are no plans for GTA 6 discs to be printed — not at launch, and not months after,” based on information provided by its source.

When Rockstar Support mentioned a “physical copy,” it was referring to the physical version the company has already announced – the one that comes with just a code in the box. “The following months” simply means following pre-orders going live this week and all the announcements that came with it, not the following months after GTA 6 goes live in November.

Why Rockstar Made This Decision

The decision appears to be a security measure. By using download codes, Rockstar can control exactly when players gain access to the game and prevent leaks, where retailers that break street date can often end up sending games to customers as early as weeks before launch.

Industry analysts have noted that the move makes commercial sense. As of the end of May 2026, more than half of all Xbox Series consoles sold to date in the US do not include a physical media drive, with PlayStation 5 digital hardware SKUs accounting for just over a quarter of all PS5 console sales. The Game Business analyst Chris Dring told VGC that the decision is almost all upside for Rockstar – development can continue right up until launch without the distraction of disc pressing and logistics, while also eliminating second-hand sales and reducing the risk of early leaks.

Retailers Boycott

Some independent retailers have refused to stock the code-in-a-box version. Canadian retailer Video Games Plus announced that, due to its long-standing commitment to supporting physical media and game preservation, its company policy is that it does not carry physical products for video game consoles that contain only a digital download code. US-based Loot Box Gaming made a similar announcement.

What This Means for Players

Those hoping to play Grand Theft Auto VI in November will have to contend with playing a digital copy of the game, whether they buy them directly from the Xbox or PlayStation Store, or grab a boxed copy from the various retailers selling the game.
