Red Dead Redemption 2 has been out for nearly eight years, and players are still uncovering hidden gems. The latest discovery isn’t about a tragic backstory or a rare weapon – it’s about a bell. And the reaction it provokes is absolutely hilarious.

The Bell of Rhodes
In the town of Rhodes, just outside the train station, there is a large bell. Most players probably ride past it without a second thought. But if you visit at midnight – the witching hour – and throw a tomahawk or a throwing knife at the bell, something unexpected happens: the townsfolk wake up. And they are not happy.
The NPCs, clearly trying to sleep, start with relatively calm complaints: “Stop shooting that gun! I’m trying to get some sleep.” As the ringing continues, they grow more agitated: “Shut the hell up!” Eventually, one resident will offer a very harsh suggestion about what you should do with your weapon.
It’s a small, easily missed interaction, but it’s exactly the kind of detail that makes Red Dead Redemption 2 feel alive. The fact that the NPCs refer to the sound as a “gun” even when you’re using a throwing knife is a minor inconsistency, but the spirit of the joke remains intact: do not disturb the good people of Rhodes after dark.
A Community Rediscovery
The detail was recently shared by YouTuber Ardee Artoo, and the clip has been making the rounds on Reddit and Twitter. Many players admitted they had never tried ringing the bell at night. One fan joked that they’d spent hundreds of hours in the game but “never thought to be a public nuisance on that level.”
It’s a testament to Rockstar’s world-building. Even minor props have hidden triggers, and NPCs have reactions that most players will never see. That level of care is why Red Dead Redemption 2 remains a gold standard for open‑world immersion.
