Sony to PS4 Owners: Want GTA 6? Time to Buy a PS5
With Grand Theft Auto VI now scheduled for November 19, 2026, Sony is making sure that PlayStation 4 users who added the game to their wishlist understand a hard truth: the game will not run on their console.

The company has started sending targeted upgrade emails to PlayStation users who still do not own a PS5. The message reportedly reads: “Grand Theft Auto VI is on your wishlist. Get a PlayStation 5 today to be ready for when Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026.”
The wording makes it clear that these emails are aimed at PS4 owners who added the game to their digital wishlist but lack the supported hardware. Rockstar Games has only announced GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no PS4, Xbox One, or PC version planned at launch.
No PS6 in Sight, Memory Constraints Loom
Sony has recently confirmed that there is no release date for a PlayStation 6, meaning the PS5 will be the only Sony console capable of running GTA VI for the foreseeable future. The company also expects lower PlayStation hardware sales in FY2026, citing memory prices that are expected to affect console supply and margins. Sony said it will base PS5 hardware sales on the amount of memory it can procure at reasonable prices – a direct consequence of the ongoing AI‑driven DRAM shortage.

A Smart (and Aggressive) Marketing Move
The email campaign is a logical step for Sony. GTA VI is expected to be the largest entertainment launch of the year, and securing a PS5 in a potential supply‑constrained environment may become difficult as November approaches. By reminding PS4 owners early, Sony hopes to convert its vast last‑gen user base into PS5 buyers well before the game’s release.
For gamers still on PS4, the message is unambiguous: if you want to play GTA VI at launch, you need current‑gen hardware – and you should start shopping now.
