Red Dead Redemption 2 is already widely praised for its stunning realism – from natural movement animations to a fully simulated wildlife food chain. But one modder has decided that even the game’s economy could use a dose of historical authenticity. Enter the 1899 Economy Overhaul, a free mod that rebalances prices, rewards, and loot to reflect what things actually cost in the late 19th century.

What the Mod Changes
Created by modder Dev614, the overhaul adjusts the prices of almost every in‑game item, including food, general goods, clothing, weapons, and ammunition. It also modifies mission payouts, the amount of money you can loot from enemies and containers, and the value of valuables. Even horse breeds, tack, hunting goods, and weapon customization costs have been reworked.
The goal isn’t to make the game harder or easier – it’s to make it more authentic. In vanilla RDR2, prices are balanced for gameplay, not historical accuracy. This mod corrects that, so you’ll feel the weight of a dollar in 1899.
Recommended Companion Mods
Dev614 suggests pairing the economy overhaul with a few other mods for the full immersive experience:
- Real Gun Names – changes weapon names to their real‑life historical counterparts.
- Loot Economy Overhaul – makes valuable loot rarer, preventing you from getting rich too quickly.
- Combat Overhauls – increases the challenge of gunfights, making every dollar earned feel more rewarding.
All these mods are available on the Red Dead Redemption 2 Nexus Mods page.

A Fresh Reason to Replay
For players who have already spent hundreds of hours in the frontier, the 1899 Economy Overhaul offers a fresh challenge. You’ll have to think twice before buying that new rifle or customizing your revolver. Hunting, robbing, and treasure hunting become more meaningful when money actually reflects the era.
Best of all, the mod is free. Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for a new way to experience Arthur Morgan’s journey, this overhaul is worth downloading.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. The mod is only for PC via Nexus Mods.
