GTA 6’s First Gameplay Trailer Is Dropping on Netflix of All Places

After more than a year of radio silence, Rockstar Games has finally broken cover—and in the most unexpected way possible. Rather than the traditional YouTube premiere, the next major look at Grand Theft Auto VI is heading to Netflix.

In a surprise announcement on August 6, Rockstar confirmed that “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” will premiere exclusively on the streaming platform on Thursday, August 27 at 3 PM ET (8 PM UK).

It’s a first-of-its-kind partnership for the studio. Netflix described the collaboration as a “first-of-its-kind partnership”, with Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s VP of Nonfiction Series, adding that “The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto 6 is unprecedented, and we’re honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first”.

What Exactly Is “An Extended Look”?

While Rockstar has been light on specifics, the title suggests this is far more substantial than a standard two-minute trailer. Netflix’s official description simply states: “See an extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6, the next evolution in the Grand Theft Auto series”.

The length is still unconfirmed, but there are strong indications it could be significant. Netflix customer support reportedly told a fan that the showcase will last approximately 20 minutes. This aligns with a previous leak from GTA content creator DarkViperAU, who claimed back in June that the next trailer would be a 20‑minute gameplay video.

Given that Rockstar has yet to show any raw, unedited gameplay footage—despite pre‑orders opening in June—fans are expecting this to be the first proper look at Vice City in action. As one fan put it on social media: “OH MY GOD GAMEPLAY?”

When and Where to Watch

Netflix Premiere
Thursday, August 27 at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET / 8 PM UK

YouTube & GTA VI Website Release
The same footage will be released six hours later on the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the GTA VI website at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET / 2 AM UK (August 28)

This staggered release means Netflix subscribers get an exclusive six‑hour head start before the footage becomes freely available to everyone. Netflix subscribers can already set a reminder at netflix.com/GTAVI.

The move has predictably sparked debate. Some fans are thrilled, others are frustrated by the paywall—even if it’s only temporary. As one outlet noted, “The extended look premieres exclusively on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET on August 27. It then goes free on YouTube and the GTA VI website at 9 p.m. ET the same day”.

What This Means for GTA 6’s Marketing

This Netflix partnership marks a significant shift in Rockstar’s marketing strategy. With the game now just under three months from its November 19 release date, the “Extended Look” is expected to kick off the final phase of the promotional campaign.

The two trailers released so far—in December 2023 and May 2025—have focused largely on cinematic cutscenes and atmosphere. This extended showcase promises to be the moment fans finally see the game from the player’s perspective.
