Rockstar Games has broken its silence to be the bearer of bad news once again. So much for that “plays best on PS5” tagline…

GTA 6 Region-Lock Confirmed by Rockstar Proves Physical Media Matters

Now that marketing for Grand Theft Auto VI is officially starting to ramp up, we can expect to hear a lot more from Rockstar Games in the coming months. However, one of its most recent updates on the console editions of its next game has got fans all flustered.

In the “Grand Theft Auto VI Platforms, Editions, and Versions” article on Rockstar’s official website, details on the various pre-order editions were shared in black-and-white, such as contents, physical vs digital and more.

The standout line for many, though, can be found towards the bottom of the page: PlayStation codes purchased in specific regions are to only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to a specific set of countries. It goes on to say that any Xbox codes purchased “are not region-locked”. Perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate which console is best-suited for the next Grand Theft Auto?

The GTA 6 Region-Lock Proves Why Physical Media Matters

PlayStation owners are probably scratching their heads at this news as all digital codes for Sony’s platform are region-locked. That’s always been the case and it’s unlikely to change, especially when the company plans to shelve physical media altogether in a couple of years.

However, GTA 6 is an interesting case because this region-lock is going to be more restrictive than ever, especially for those living in the United States. In the past, region-locks for the United States have covered the entire region. So a digital game you purchased in North America for instance would be redeemable in South America but not anywhere outside of America.

As Rockstar Games’ breakdown of regions confirms, though, the United States is going to be split up for GTA 6‘s code distribution. Brazil, LATAM countries and North America will all make up their own separate regions.

Now this shouldn’t be a deal-breaker by any means, and if you’re dead-set on purchasing a copy of GTA 6 from outside your region (some gamers do this to secure cheaper copies), you’ll still be able to do so on Xbox. For PlayStation, however, it shines a brighter light on its ongoing digital vs physical controversy. PlayStation 5 discs are not region-locked. You can buy a PlayStation 5 game from the United States, bring it back to the United Kingdom and play it on your console with no issues.

However, GTA 6 will be the first Grand Theft Auto game that you can’t buy on disc, which is why this region-lock is a bigger deal than usual.

PS5 Buyers Must Match Their Account’s Region

Rockstar has divided the world into nine regions for PS5 code redemption: North America, Latin America, Brazil, the UK, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia/UAE, Rest of Asia, and EMEA/Oceania. A code purchased in one region will only activate on a PlayStation Network account registered to that same region.

Rockstar’s own wording on this is direct: “If you purchase either version of Grand Theft Auto VI in a region different from your platform account, that version must match the region of your platform account”. In practice, that means someone buying a US retail copy needs a North American PSN account for the code to actually work. Importing a cheaper copy from overseas is a genuine gamble.

Japan Has Its Own Extra Rule

On top of the general PS5 restriction, Japan comes with an additional wrinkle. Codes issued there expire 170 days after the game’s November 19, 2026 launch, landing on January 12, 2027. Miss that window, and the code becomes unusable.

Xbox Skips the Drama Entirely

This entire restriction is specific to PlayStation. Rockstar has confirmed Xbox Series X|S download codes carry no region lock whatsoever, so an imported copy will redeem and work regardless of where it was purchased or which Xbox account is used.

The restriction exists because PSN accounts are tied to a fixed regional store, a limitation Xbox’s account system doesn’t share. Microsoft’s region-free approach gives Xbox a clear edge for global buyers.

The “Plays Best on PS5” Campaign in Shambles

It’s especially vexing when both PlayStation and Rockstar Games claim GTA VI will be played best on Sony’s consoles, all while sneakily restricting who can play what and where. The “plays best on PS5” tagline was already met with skepticism from Xbox fans, but this region-lock revelation has poured cold water on the entire campaign.

Digital Foundry has also poured cold water on the “plays best” claim, predicting GTA 6 will likely run at 30 frames per second on both PS5 and Xbox Series X due to CPU limitations. The technical advantages Sony has highlighted — DualSense haptics, 3D audio, and SSD loading — are a far cry from the kind of performance advantage that would justify region-locking customers out of the game.

Again, it’s not an enormous deal-breaker as we’re sure most people will purchase their copy of the game in their own region, but it’s another damning sign for the future of gaming. Options are important, and yet they’re slowly dwindling. The disc-less future Sony is aggressively pushing has just become a lot more complicated for PlayStation fans who want to import or travel with their games.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC release date has not yet been announced.
