Former Rockstar Producer Reveals Why GTA 6 Could Arrive Later on PC

While console gamers are looking forward to the highly anticipated release of GTA 6 this November, PC gamers are left wondering when their time will come. There’s no question that the arrival of the next entry in Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto series is by far the biggest launch of 2026 — in fact, it’s the biggest launch in quite some years.

That being said, despite GTA 6 being delayed on more than one occasion, it now looks set in stone that it will stick to its current release date of November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

However, what about PC gamers? Rockstar Games hasn’t announced this port yet, despite GTA 6 first being revealed in December 2023.

A Former Producer’s Perspective

Former Rockstar Games producer John Ricchio, who was with the company between 2003 and 2014 and worked on titles like Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, and GTA V, has a theory. In an interview with the YouTube channel Kiwi Talkz, Ricchio explained that the delay isn’t about a lack of interest in the PC platform — it’s about development priorities and technical realities.

It’s always better to start with the constraints and then extend,” Ricchio said. “Because shrinking is a lot harder than extending. It’s way harder to make your game performant than it is to just be like ‘Oh, we’ve got extra room? Cool, we can deoptimize or make things more shiny.'”

Technical Realities: Why Consoles Come First

Ricchio emphasized that development on consoles is more straightforward compared to the complications of PC. Almost every gamer’s system is different, whereas with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, developers know exactly what they’re catering to.

“They’ve got an ecosystem, they’ve got hardware that they know exactly what the specs are, they know what the thermal limits of the unit are, and they can dedicate all their resources to it,” Ricchio explained. “They don’t have to worry about, ‘Oh, what if this person has a graphics card that is 10 years old?'”

He noted that PC development requires supporting a wide range of processors, graphics cards, and system configurations, which adds more testing and optimization work.

Resource Allocation: The Business Case

Ricchio also addressed the misconception that Rockstar has unlimited resources. Even at a studio with major financial backing, resources are “always limited.”

He revealed that a PC build of Red Dead Redemption existed during the game’s development, but the team had to decide whether a PC port was more valuable than putting people on GTA V.

“It’s never any specific, you know, anti-any platform,” Ricchio said. “It’s just, is it worth spending the time and effort to get something running on [PC]? … If you’re working on that, you’re not working on something else.”

“Most of the time it’s just… is it worth spending time getting a PC port going versus working on GTA V?” “At the end of the day, they look at the numbers and go, ‘We need these 50 engineers to go make GTA V amazing, or we can have them spend six months making a PC port.’ And GTA V wins every single time.”

Rockstar’s Familiar Pattern

The GTA 6 PC release delay follows Rockstar Games’ familiar pattern. Over the years, Rockstar has typically released PC ports after consoles:

  • Grand Theft Auto V launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013 but didn’t arrive on PC until April 2015 — roughly 18 months later.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 debuted on consoles in October 2018 and came to PC in November 2019 — just over a year later.

Thankfully, nothing will compare to the delay of the original Red Dead Redemption, which was first released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010 but arrived on PC a staggering 14 years later — a decision Ricchio attributed to business priorities rather than technical limitations.

When Can PC Players Expect GTA 6?

While Rockstar has not announced a PC release date, industry speculation suggests PC players may have to wait anywhere from a year to 18 months after the console launch.

Some leaks have suggested a February 2027 release window, just three months after the console launch, though this timeline has been met with skepticism. Given Rockstar’s historical patterns, a longer wait is more likely.

As Ricchio noted, “There has to be enough of a business reason to do some of those ports, or the lift has to be so light that it’s like, ‘Oh, it’ll be super easy to do.’ And it’s rarely super light; there’s always something that you’ve got to do.”

The Bottom Line

PC gamers shouldn’t take the delay personally. As Ricchio put it, “It’s never any specific anti-platform [stance].” The decision is rooted in technical practicality and resource management, not neglect. While the wait may be frustrating, the PC version will likely arrive with enhanced graphics and performance, as seen with previous Rockstar ports.

Hopefully, following the launch of GTA 6 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026, PC gamers will only have to wait a year, maybe two years maximum. We’ll keep you posted when Rockstar Games drops a release date for the PC port.
