While the GTA 6 community has descended into monitoring oxygen levels and counting cigarette butts outside Rockstar’s Edinburgh studio, a more substantive debate is quietly taking shape. As the long wait for GTA 6 Trailer 3 and pre‑orders continues, fans have turned their attention to the game’s map – specifically, whether Vice City and the state of Leonida should be fully explorable from the very beginning or unlocked gradually as the story progresses.

Two Camps, One Map
On one side, players argue for complete freedom. “It should be open at the start but have it be like GTA V and RDR2, where you don’t even feel the need to roam further than the chapter you’re in,” explained Reddit user Daryl_Dixon1899. The idea is that a well‑designed world naturally guides you without artificial barriers. Another fan added, “It better be open. I’ll take a prologue, but after that it should be completely open.”
On the other side, some want a more controlled experience. “The map should be updated as the story progresses. I like to savour all of the parts one by one and not spoil it,” commented kaspers126. User Series‑Every agreed: “I really like unlocking new parts. Personally, I think it’ll just be too much to have the entire map exploitable at once.”
The division is not new – Rockstar has used both approaches. GTA V allowed almost the entire map to be explored after a short prologue, while Red Dead Redemption 2 gradually opened new states as the story unfolded, with certain areas locked until specific chapters.
GTA 6 Ankle Monitor Theory
A compelling theory may already have solved the debate. Since the first key art and trailer, fans have noticed that protagonist Lucia wears an ankle monitor. The trailer also shows her being released from prison. The theory suggests that in the early stages of GTA 6, Lucia’s ankle monitor will restrict her movement. Venture too far from the permitted zone, and the police will be alerted – a diegetic way to limit the map without feeling artificial.
If true, this would be a clever narrative device. The map would technically be open, but the player would be incentivised to stay within certain bounds until the story progresses and the monitor is removed. It’s a best‑of‑both‑worlds solution: freedom with consequence, exploration without immediate access to endgame areas.

The Real Wait
Of course, none of this will be confirmed until Rockstar finally releases the third trailer and opens pre‑orders. Take‑Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has promised that marketing will begin this summer – meteorological summer started June 1, astronomical summer begins June 21. Either way, the window is now open. Trailer 3 could drop any day, and with it, answers to the GTA 6 map debate.
Until then, fans will continue their eccentric rituals. But the oxygen sensors and cigarette counts will soon be forgotten. Vice City is almost here.
GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC version is expected later.
