During a May 28 quarterly earnings call, CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michał Nowakowski revealed that the open‑world RPG has sold over 65 million copies worldwide. The announcement came just one day after the studio shocked fans by revealing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, a third full‑fledged expansion scheduled for 2027.
A Decade of Dominance
The Witcher 3 first launched in 2015 and quickly became a phenomenon, selling 6 million copies in its first six weeks. By 2019, that number had grown to 20 million. The Netflix series (season one debuted in December 2019) caused a 554% sales spike, and the game has continued to move over 5 million units annually ever since. The latest 65 million figure solidifies its status as one of the most beloved RPGs of all time.
8th Best‑Selling Game Ever
According to Wikipedia’s (admittedly imperfect) list of best‑selling games, The Witcher 3 now sits at number 8, just behind Terraria (70 million) and ahead of Super Mario Bros. (58 million). The top spots are held by Tetris (520 million), Minecraft (350 million), and Grand Theft Auto V (230 million). Cyberpunk 2077, CDPR’s other massive hit, has sold over 35 million copies – an impressive total, but still far from the White Wolf’s throne.
A Surprise Expansion on the Horizon
The sales milestone is made even sweeter by the recent announcement of Songs of the Past, a third expansion for The Witcher 3. Co‑developed with Fool’s Theory (the studio behind the upcoming Witcher remake), the DLC will see Geralt embark on one final adventure before passing the torch to Ciri in The Witcher 4. It is scheduled for 2027 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S (no last‑gen or Switch).
The expansion is expected to be substantial – possibly larger than Blood and Wine – and will feature returning characters including Dandelion, Yennefer, and Ciri. It will also serve as a direct narrative bridge to The Witcher 4, which is now expected in late 2028 or 2029 as part of a new trilogy.
