Ubisoft has officially unveiled Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, ending years of speculation. The remake of the beloved pirate adventure has a release date of July 9, 2026 – just a few months away. However, the announcement came with bittersweet news: the remake will not be content‑complete at launch.

What’s Missing?
Two significant components from the original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag are absent from Resynced:
- Freedom Cry DLC: This acclaimed single‑player expansion follows Adéwalé, Edward Kenway’s first mate, over a decade after the main story. Adéwalé, a former slave turned Assassin, works to dismantle the Caribbean slave trade. It’s a powerful narrative that showcases one of the series’ most memorable supporting characters. Ubisoft has confirmed that Freedom Cry will not be included in the remake, nor is there any plan to re‑release it separately.
- Multiplayer Mode: Black Flag’s competitive multiplayer, where players hunted each other in crowded maps while blending into crowds of NPCs, was a fan‑favorite feature. The cat‑and‑mouse gameplay was unique and highly replayable, but it will not return in Resynced.
Ubisoft has stated that the original version of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will remain available on digital stores. It will not be delisted or replaced, so players who want to experience Freedom Cry or the original multiplayer can still purchase the classic edition.
What’s New?
To compensate for the missing content, Resynced introduces several new features and improvements:
- New Side Characters: Additional NPCs have been added, each with their own side stories. Completing these quests unlocks powerful upgrades for the Jackdaw, Edward’s ship.
- Expanded Narrative: New scenes exploring Edward’s past have been woven into the main campaign, adding depth to his character.
- Gameplay Overhaul: Parkour and combat have been completely revamped, making movement more fluid and battles more responsive. Combined with the graphical upgrades (ray tracing, higher resolution textures, improved lighting), Resynced aims to deliver a modern feel while retaining the spirit of the original.

A Compromise Worth Making?
The removal of Freedom Cry and multiplayer will disappoint long‑time fans. Freedom Cry, in particular, is considered one of the best pieces of DLC in the franchise. However, Ubisoft’s decision to keep the original game available ensures that these experiences aren’t lost.
For new players, Resynced offers a streamlined, enhanced version of the main campaign with meaningful additions. For purists, the original remains a click away. Whether this compromise is acceptable will depend on how much value you place on Adéwalé’s story and the unique multiplayer mode.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced sets sail on July 9, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Pre‑orders are expected to open soon following today’s reveal.
