Qualcomm Steps Back from GDC 2026: Windows Handheld Announcements Delayed
For enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the next wave of Windows gaming handhelds, the horizon just got a little further away. Qualcomm has confirmed that it will not be announcing any new Windows gaming handheld chips at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2026, walking back earlier hints that the show could be a major launchpad for Snapdragon-powered devices.

GDC 2026 is scheduled to run from March 9 to March 13 in San Francisco, and many in the industry had circled it as a potential checkpoint for new Windows on Arm handheld hardware. However, those expectations have now been officially dialed back.
What Qualcomm Won’t Be Showing
According to a statement provided to The Verge, Qualcomm will not announce updates to its Snapdragon G Series gaming chips at the event. The company also confirmed it will not offer journalists hands-on access or benchmarking opportunities for the recently announced Snapdragon X Series updates during GDC.
This pullback is notable because earlier in the year, Qualcomm had suggested that while major handheld announcements weren’t coming at CES, GDC in March could be the more likely venue for such reveals.
The Official Statement
A Qualcomm spokesperson provided a statement to The Verge, saying: “Snapdragon X Series and Snapdragon G Series processors are pushing the PC, desktop, and handheld gaming device industries forward. Our commitment remains strong, and we can’t wait to share more information about these areas”.
The statement reaffirms the company’s long-term commitment to the space while acknowledging that GDC 2026 will not be the moment for those announcements.
Why the Delay?
Qualcomm did not provide a specific reason for the shift in plans, but reports point to the ongoing global memory shortage as a contributing factor. During Qualcomm’s February earnings call, CEO Cristiano Amon commented on limited memory availability affecting device builds, suggesting that supply chain challenges may be influencing product timing.
This isn’t just a Qualcomm issue. The entire semiconductor industry continues to grapple with DRAM and NAND constraints driven by AI infrastructure demand, which has made it difficult for companies to secure the memory components necessary for new device production.
Intel’s Handheld Plans Also Slip
Qualcomm isn’t the only player adjusting its timeline. Recent reporting indicates that Intel’s “Arc G3” handheld-oriented Panther Lake plans have been pushed to Q2 2026. This would move potential Intel Arc G3 era handhelds out of the March window as well.
The combination of Qualcomm’s GDC pullback and Intel’s delayed timeline means that consumers hoping for new Windows gaming handheld announcements in the near term will need to wait a bit longer.

What’s Next: Computex 2026
With Qualcomm skipping GDC and Intel’s handheld silicon reportedly sliding, the next major industry window looks closer to Computex 2026, which is scheduled for early June. While this does not guarantee announcements, it aligns with when vendors typically reset laptop and handheld roadmaps after Q1 and early Q2 shifts.
For now, the Windows gaming handheld market remains in a holding pattern. The potential for Snapdragon-powered devices is clear, but the timeline for their arrival has become less certain.
