Geralt’s first adventure is coming back, but it appears we’ll need to sharpen our silver swords and practice our patience. According to a new report from a Polish investment firm that closely tracks CD Projekt Red, the highly anticipated Witcher remake of the original The Witcher may not arrive until 2028.

Why the Wait?
The rumored delay stems from a strategic shift in resources. Developer Fool’s Theory, which is leading development on the remake (codenamed Canis Majoris), has reportedly reassigned a significant portion of its team to assist CD Projekt Red with the development of The Witcher 4 (Project Polaris).
This move, confirmed in part by CD Projekt Red leadership in late 2025, means that while the remake is still in progress, it is being worked on by a “smaller group of people” as the primary focus remains on launching Ciri’s debut adventure. The analyst report from Noble Securities suggests this has “significantly slowed progress,” pushing the remake’s release window back by roughly a year from an earlier 2027 target.
The decision makes strategic sense. The Witcher 4 marks the studio’s first major project in Unreal Engine 5, and ensuring its successful launch is the company’s top priority. The experience gained there will likely benefit the remake, which is also being built in Unreal Engine 5, in the long run.
What About The Witcher 4?
For those keeping track, the same analyst report pegs The Witcher 4 for a release between October and November 2027. This aligns with previous statements from CD Projekt Red leadership, who have confirmed the game is in full-scale production but have cautioned that it will not launch in 2026.
A Silver Lining on the Horizon?
While waiting until 2028 for the remake may be disappointing, there is a potential consolation prize on the much nearer horizon. Persistent rumors, also originating from analyst Mateusz Chrzanowski, suggest that a third paid story expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt could be released as early as May 2026.
This DLC is rumored to be priced at around $30 and would serve as a narrative bridge, potentially offering one last adventure with Geralt before Ciri takes the reins in the upcoming sequel. It would also provide a perfect excuse to revisit the Continent before the next chapter begins.

The Official Word
As with all rumors and analyst predictions, it is crucial to manage expectations. CD Projekt Red has not officially confirmed a 2028 release window for The Witcher Remake. When the project was first announced in October 2022, the studio asked fans for patience, stating, “it’s gonna be a while until we can start talking about this project in detail”.
That “while” may now be extending into 2028. For fans eager to experience a modernized take on Geralt’s original hunt for the Striga, the key takeaway is to settle in for the long haul. The Path is long, but it will hopefully be worth the wait.
