Oops: ASRock Publishes Press Release for Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, AMD’s Unannounced Flagship
The PC hardware rumor mill has been buzzing for months about a potential ultimate flagship from AMD: a Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 featuring dual 3D V-Cache chiplets. AMD never confirmed the chip at CES 2026, and as weeks turned into months, many enthusiasts assumed it had been shelved.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, a press release appeared on ASRock’s official website.
The document, which appears to have been published prematurely or under an incorrect date, announces that ASRock motherboards have added support for the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2. The timing and nature of the publication suggest it was not meant to go live—yet there it was, a quiet confirmation of a CPU AMD has never officially acknowledged.
What Is the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2?
While ASRock’s press release does not list specifications, the CPU has been the subject of persistent rumors. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is expected to be a 16-core, 32-thread Zen 5 processor with a critical distinction from the existing Ryzen 9 9950X3D: both of its chiplets are stacked with 3D V-Cache.
Where the standard 9950X3D features one 3D V-Cache die (64MB) and one standard die (64MB) for a total of 128MB of L3 cache, the 9950X3D2 would reportedly feature 96MB of L3 cache per chiplet (64MB V-Cache + 32MB standard), bringing the total to 192MB. To handle the additional thermal and power demands, the chip is rumored to carry a 200W TDP, up from the 9950X3D’s 170W.
The increased cache would be a first for AMD’s consumer desktop lineup, potentially delivering significant performance gains in cache-sensitive gaming and productivity workloads.
What ASRock’s Announcement Says
The press release, which was visible on ASRock’s site before likely being pulled or corrected, states that the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is supported across ASRock’s motherboard lineup with BIOS version 4.03. That would theoretically include entry-level A620 boards, which seems questionable for a 200W flagship CPU.
Notably, the CPU does not yet appear on ASRock’s official CPU support lists, suggesting the press release jumped the gun on an announcement still awaiting finalization.

What This Means
For weeks, the silence around the 9950X3D2 had fueled speculation that AMD had abandoned the project. If ASRock’s announcement is accurate—and the document appears authentic—it would mean the chip is not only alive but nearing readiness for market.
AMD has not commented on the leak. The company may still choose to launch the 9950X3D2 as a surprise halo product, or it could have intended to announce it alongside the rumored Ryzen 7 9750X and Ryzen 5 9650X as part of a broader mid-year refresh.
For now, the CPU exists in a strange limbo: officially unannounced by AMD, yet officially supported by one of its largest motherboard partners. Whether this was an accidental reveal or a signal of an imminent launch remains to be seen.
