No GPU Needed: LG’s New 39-Inch 5K2K OLED Handles AI Upscaling Itself
LG has officially published product pages for its upcoming UltraGear 39GX950B, a 39-inch gaming OLED first shown at CES 2026. The monitor brings a combination of cutting-edge panel technology and a surprising set of AI-driven features—including one that could take some load off your graphics card.
According to LG’s Canada and Japan listings, the 39GX950B uses a 38.86-inch 21:9 OLED panel with 5120 x 2160 (5K2K) resolution, a 1500R curvature, and a pixel density of 143 PPI. LG markets it as the world’s first 39-inch 5K2K OLED gaming monitor.
4th Gen Tandem OLED and Brightness
The monitor features LG’s 4th Gen Tandem OLED panel, which stacks multiple emission layers to improve brightness and longevity. Typical SDR brightness is rated at 335 cd/m², with peak HDR brightness hitting 1500 nits for small highlights. The panel covers 99.5% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and supports 10-bit color with VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification.
Gaming Performance
At native 5K2K resolution, the 39GX950B supports up to 165Hz refresh rate. A “Dual Mode” allows switching to WFHD (2560 x 1080) at 330Hz for competitive titles where frame rate matters more than resolution. Response time is listed at 0.03ms GtG, and the monitor supports FreeSync Premium Pro, G-SYNC Compatible, and VRR.
AI Without a GPU
Perhaps the most intriguing feature is the built-in AI upscaling. LG says the monitor’s internal processor can upscale lower-resolution content to 5K2K without tapping into the host GPU’s resources. That means even with a modest graphics card, the monitor can fill its 5120×2160 panel with enhanced detail.
The AI features don’t stop there. LG also includes:
- AI Sound: Separates voices, effects, and background audio for a virtual 7.1.2-channel effect through the built-in 7W stereo speakers or headphones
- AI Scene Optimization: Automatically detects content type (games, movies, documents) and adjusts color temperature, sharpness, and color enhancement accordingly
Connectivity and Ergonomics
The 39GX950B comes with DisplayPort 2.1 (full bandwidth UHBR 20), two HDMI 2.1 ports, and a USB Type-C port that handles data, display output, and up to 90W power delivery for charging a laptop. Two USB 3.2 Gen 2 downstream ports and a 4-pole headphone jack complete the I/O. The stand offers tilt, height, and swivel adjustment, and the monitor supports hardware calibration.
