The Grand Theft Auto VI community was recently buzzing over an alleged release date leak—but it turns out the whole thing was just a mistake that got out of hand.
Retailer “Leaks” GTA 6 Release Date
On January 29, an online retailer, X Uruguay, unexpectedly listed GTA 6 with a September 17 release date—seemingly before Rockstar Games made any official announcement.
The product description read:
“Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the Leonida Estate, home of the neon-lit streets of Vice City and beyond, in the most immersive and expansive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet. Coming September 17th.”
Naturally, this sparked speculation across the gaming community. However, X Uruguay quickly retracted the date, explaining it was simply a misunderstanding.
Retailer Admits It Was Just a Joke
Shortly after the post went viral, X Uruguay issued a statement clarifying the situation:
“Like all fans, we are super excited and expectant for the release of GTA 6… It was not our intention to cause confusion, and we want to clarify that we did not receive any official information from any of the brands regarding the game’s release date.”
They went on to explain that the date was added as a joke, saying:
“A new guy told us the release date of GTA was already on Google (it was actually the release date of GTA V), and we told him OK then put it. It was more of an inside joke that escalated.”
Unfortunately for that “new guy,” this might not be the best way to start a career in retail.
Fans React to the Fake Leak
The GTA community wasted no time in mocking the situation, with many fans pointing out the obvious flaws in the supposed leak.
On the r/GTA6 subreddit, one user sarcastically wrote:
“Yes. A retailer in Uruguay has inside knowledge of Rockstar’s release schedule.”
Another pointed out the flaw in the date itself:
“September 17 is on a Wednesday. If the game was releasing then, we would have had Trailer 2 already.”
What This Means for GTA 6’s Release
At this point, any GTA 6 release date “leaks” should be taken with a grain of salt. Rockstar Games has yet to announce an official release date, and anything short of an official confirmation is just speculation.
