Will GTA 6 Run at 60FPS on Consoles?

Rockstar Games has remained tight-lipped about the technical details of Grand Theft Auto VI, including its frame rate across consoles and PC. However, former Rockstar animator Mike York, who worked on Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V, recently shared his thoughts on the matter—and the news might not be what fans were hoping for.

Speaking on the Kiwi Talkz podcast (via GamesRadar+), York expressed doubts about GTA VI reaching 60FPS on consoles at launch.

“I don’t know if they’ll be able to pull off 60FPS,” he admitted. “I think they’re going to be shooting for a locked 30FPS, meaning it never dips below that… Once it’s on PC, it’ll probably get optimized and new graphics cards will help it reach 60FPS, but I doubt it will happen on consoles right away.”

What About the PlayStation 5 Pro?

With Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro expected to release before GTA VI, some players hope that next-gen hardware will improve frame rates. However, even with hardware upgrades, York remains skeptical.

“I don’t think the initial release will come out at 60FPS unless an AI upscaler like PlayStation’s technology helps push it there,” he explained. “Maybe on PS5 Pro, but even then, I’m not sure.”

What Does This Mean for GTA 6 Fans?

If York’s prediction is correct, GTA VI will likely run at 30FPS on consoles at launch, with 60FPS only achievable later on PC through optimizations and future hardware advancements. While this might be disappointing for some, Rockstar is known for prioritizing visual fidelity and smooth gameplay over raw frame rates.
