Fallout 5 May Not Be As Far Away As We Thought, Todd Howard Teases
Fans of the Fallout series, buoyed by the success of the Prime Video adaptation, have been patiently—and anxiously—waiting for news on the next single-player entry. While it’s been confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI is Bethesda Game Studios’ current priority, new comments from Director Todd Howard suggest that the wait for Fallout 5 might not be the decade-long gap many had feared.

In a recent interview, Howard addressed the studio’s ongoing commitment to the post-apocalyptic franchise. “I will say, first, looking at 76, we’ve never stopped developing Fallout. We’ve had a full team on Fallout for a long time,” he stated. He emphasized that Fallout remains the franchise receiving the most ongoing work at Bethesda, even beyond the live-service Fallout 76.
The key tease came when Howard confirmed the studio is working on other, unannounced Fallout projects. “We are doing other things with Fallout that we haven’t announced,” he said, adding, “there’ll come a time for that.” While he acknowledged fan anxiety for new content, he affirmed the studio’s preference for revealing projects only when the time is right to create a “special moment” for the community.
This revelation is significant. While the “majority” of Bethesda’s internal team is indeed dedicated to The Elder Scrolls VI, Howard’s comments confirm that a separate, active pipeline for Fallout exists. This work could range from smaller projects to early pre-production on Fallout 5 itself, potentially allowing development to transition more swiftly once the main Elder Scrolls effort is complete.

For years, the assumption has been that Fallout 5 would only enter full production after The Elder Scrolls VI ships—a timeline that placed it in the distant future. Howard’s update doesn’t provide a release window, but it does confirm the franchise is far from dormant. It suggests that the groundwork is being laid now, which could significantly shorten the gap between Bethesda’s two flagship series and bring the next trip into the wasteland closer than we thought.
