Assassins Creed Future Uncertain
The future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise faces new questions following the unexpected departure of one of its most influential leaders. Marc-Alexis Côté, who helped shape some of the series’ most beloved entries, has left Ubisoft after nearly twenty years with the company, creating uncertainty about the direction of upcoming projects.

Côté’s journey with Assassin’s Creed began as lead level designer on the critically acclaimed Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, widely considered one of the franchise’s high points. He subsequently served as game director for both Assassin’s Creed 3 and the fan-favorite Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, establishing himself as a key creative force behind the series’ most successful eras.
Most recently, Côté held an executive role overseeing the development of Assassin’s Creed Shadows and was responsible for planning the franchise’s overall future direction. His sudden departure, reportedly communicated to staff via email, has left many in the gaming community concerned about potential impacts on upcoming titles.
The leadership change appears connected to broader structural shifts within Ubisoft. The company has been transitioning control of the Assassin’s Creed franchise to Vantage Studios, a new subsidiary with Tencent holding a 25% stake. Reports indicate Côté was offered a leadership position at Vantage but declined, though his specific reasons for leaving remain unconfirmed.
This development raises particular questions about Assassin’s Creed Hexe, the next major entry rumored to be set in 16th century Central Europe during the witch trials. With Côté’s departure occurring during the planning phases for this and other future projects, fans are wondering how his creative vision might be replaced or redirected.
The timing does provide some stability for more immediate releases. The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage DLC “Village of Memory,” scheduled for November 18, is likely too far along in development to be affected by the leadership change.
