This confirms that owners of older Radeon RX 7000, 6000, and 5000 series graphics cards will not have access to the new AI-powered features, marking a significant shift from AMD’s previous cross-generation and vendor-agnostic approach with FSR.
A “Choose-Your-Own” Feature Set for Developers
The most revealing new detail is a small but important footnote in AMD’s latest communication: “Feature availability varies by title.” This means that FSR Redstone is not a single, monolithic preset that developers must enable all at once.
Instead, it is a modular toolkit. Game developers can pick and choose which of the four main Redstone components they want to integrate into their games based on their specific needs. These components are:
- ML Super Resolution: An AI-powered upscaling technology.
- ML Frame Generation: AI-based frame generation for smoother gameplay.
- Ray Regeneration: Uses AI to reconstruct ray-traced lighting and reflections.
- Neural Radiance Caching: An advanced technique for global illumination.
This means one game might launch with only the new AI upscaling, while another might include both upscaling and frame generation. A graphically intense title might focus solely on integrating Ray Regeneration to boost ray tracing performance.
What This Means for the Future of Gaming
This flexible strategy gives developers more freedom but could also lead to a fragmented experience for gamers. The “FSR Redstone” label on a game’s feature list will require players to check exactly which components are included.
