A New Low in CPU Return Scams
The scourge of CPU swap scams on Amazon has taken a bizarre new turn. A Reddit user has reported receiving an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition processor from Amazon that appears to have an Intel CPU underneath the AMD heat spreader.

The user, posting as danthebigboss, shared photographs of two Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 processors purchased directly from Amazon. Both were shipped and sold by Amazon and arrived in sealed boxes. The older processor had the expected AM5 contact layout, while the recently purchased unit had a large area without gold contacts. What initially appeared to be a manufacturing difference quickly became suspicious.
An Intel CPU with AMD Markings
Several commenters were quick to point out that the suspicious processor does not use AMD’s AM5 substrate. Its underside resembles that of an older Intel desktop CPU, possibly an LGA1151 model, though the exact processor has not been identified. The substrate shape, contact arrangement, and component placement are all different from those of a genuine Ryzen processor.
UNIKO’s Hardware, a well-known hardware outlet, examined the photographs and suggested that the processor combines an Intel CPU substrate with an AMD Ryzen integrated heat spreader (IHS). The outlet explained that AMD and Intel use fundamentally different substrate layouts. Intel processors can have capacitors mounted on the underside between contact pads, while AMD’s AM5 design places these components on the opposite side. The visual evidence aligns with the Intel-substrate theory.
The Return Scam Theory
The most likely explanation is a return scam. Someone may have removed the IHS from a genuine Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, attached it to an older Intel processor, and returned the modified CPU to Amazon. The actual Ryzen processor could then have been used with direct-die cooling or fitted with another heat spreader.
However, this remains a theory. There is no confirmation of how the modified processor entered Amazon’s inventory. The buyer says both packages were sealed, but this alone cannot establish whether the CPU was previously returned or modified before delivery. Amazon has not provided an explanation.
A Growing Trend
This incident is part of a disturbing pattern. In recent months, we have reported on multiple cases of Amazon customers receiving the wrong CPU in sealed boxes. One buyer found an Intel Core i9-10900K inside a sealed Ryzen 7 9800X3D box. Another received an older Ryzen 9 3900X in a Ryzen 9 9900X3D package. These scams exploit Amazon’s commingled inventory system, where returns from third-party sellers are mixed with genuine stock and shipped to unsuspecting buyers.
The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is a particularly attractive target. With a $899 price tag and limited availability, scammers stand to profit significantly by swapping the chip for a much cheaper Intel processor and reselling the genuine Ryzen chip.

What Buyers Should Do
If you’re purchasing a high-end CPU from Amazon or any other retailer, take precautions:
- Record the unboxing from the moment you open the shipping box.
- Inspect the processor carefully, including the underside, before installing it.
- Check the contact layout —a genuine AM5 CPU has a distinct pattern with capacitors on the opposite side from Intel CPUs.
- Buy from trusted sellers and avoid third-party marketplace listings when possible.
For now, the affected buyer has not announced the outcome of their case. But the incident serves as a stark reminder that even sealed boxes from major retailers are not immune to scams.
