AMD’s Gaming Champion Just Got Cheaper: Ryzen 7 9800X3D Now $409
Fresh discounts continue to hit AMD’s desktop processor lineup, and the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the latest beneficiary. Amazon is now listing the 8-core, 16-thread Zen 5 X3D chip at $409.95 —a new all-time low price.

The processor launched at $479, meaning the current discount shaves roughly $70 off the original MSRP. Just last week, the chip was sitting at $419.95, so this latest cut pushes the price another $10 lower in a matter of days.
Widening the Gap Over the 9850X3D
The price drop makes the value argument against the newer Ryzen 7 9850X3D even more compelling. The 9850X3D currently sits at $489 on Amazon, leaving an $80 gap between the two 8-core X3D chips.
In gaming workloads—the primary use case for both processors—the performance difference is minimal, often in the low single-digit percentages. The 9850X3D offers a slightly higher boost clock (5.6 GHz vs. 5.2 GHz) and a more modern architecture, but for the vast majority of games, the 9800X3D delivers essentially identical frame rates. At $80 less, the older chip is hard to ignore.

A Trend Across the X3D Lineup
The 9800X3D isn’t the only AMD chip seeing aggressive pricing. The 12-core Ryzen 9 9900X3D has also dropped to $449.99 in recent weeks, and the Ryzen 5 9600X has been spotted at $182. While Intel’s Arrow Lake Refresh launched with prices above MSRP, AMD appears to be using discounts to maintain its value leadership in the mid-range and high-end gaming segments.

What This Means for Buyers
At just over $400, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is one of the best gaming CPUs you can buy for the money. It offers 96MB of total L3 cache (32MB standard + 64MB 3D V-Cache), eight Zen 5 cores, and a 120W TDP—all on the mature AM5 platform with a clear upgrade path to future Zen 6 chips.
For builders prioritizing gaming performance per dollar, the 9800X3D at $409 is currently the sweet spot. Unless you absolutely need the slightly higher clocks of the 9850X3D, the savings are better spent elsewhere.
