Red Dead Redemption Gets Surprise Next-Gen Upgrade
In a welcome move for fans, Rockstar Games has announced a comprehensive new-gen upgrade for the classic Red Dead Redemption, set to launch natively on modern platforms this December. The release brings John Marston’s iconic adventure to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and even the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 with significant enhancements.

Scheduled for release on December 4, this new version is more than a simple backward-compatibility patch. It offers tangible improvements for console players, including a smooth 60fps performance mode, enhanced image quality, HDR support, and up to 4K resolution on supported systems. The Nintendo Switch 2 version will also leverage DLSS technology for better performance.
The best news for existing fans is Rockstar’s upgrade path. If you already own the game on PS4, Nintendo Switch, or the digital backward-compatible version on Xbox One, you can upgrade to the new-gen version for free. Your save data will also transfer, allowing you to pick up right where you left off.
In a surprising expansion, Red Dead Redemption is also making its debut on mobile devices. The game will be available on compatible iOS and Android devices on December 2, complete with mobile-friendly control schemes. Furthermore, Netflix subscribers will be able to download and play the mobile version at no extra cost as part of their membership.
