The experiment was orchestrated by Jeffrey Phillips, who set out to test how readily Google’s AI overview would pick up and present fabricated information as fact. Between July and September, Phillips launched a coordinated campaign across multiple platforms, posting about the fictional “twerk button” feature on Reddit, creating fake controller layout images, and sharing manufactured evidence on TikTok.
The results were both startling and successful. Within a relatively short time, Google’s AI system began presenting the completely fictional “twerk button” as a legitimate feature in Grand Theft Auto VI. When questioned about his sources, Phillips simply claimed that “someone at Rockstar” had told him about the feature—a assertion that the AI system apparently found credible enough to incorporate into its summaries.
In an interview with Polygon, Phillips expressed surprise at how easily his campaign worked. “I was definitely surprised to see that I even showed up on the AI overview, especially since I didn’t even try to make anything with substantial or convincing evidence,” he explained. “I thought at most it would say some people on Reddit think it could be true. I would’ve never expected my own comments being used as a source though.”
The experiment highlights significant concerns about how AI systems gather and verify information. Despite Phillips making minimal effort to create convincing evidence—by his own admission—the AI system amplified his fictional claim to the point where it appeared as established fact in search results.
