GTA 6 the World’s First “AAAAA” Game?
The gaming industry has long used the term “AAA” to describe blockbuster titles from major publishers with massive budgets. But as games grow in scale and ambition, some are asking if a new classification is needed. According to one prominent industry figure, Grand Theft Auto VI is so monumental that it might just be the world’s first “AAAAA” game.

The comment comes from Nigel Lowrie, co-founder of the renowned independent publisher Devolver Digital. In a recent discussion reported by GameSpot, Lowrie argued that GTA VI is “just bigger than anything else both in the scope and scale of the game and the kind of cultural impact that it has.” His use of the “AAAAA” label is meant to signify a game that exists on an entirely different plane from even the biggest standard AAA releases.
This isn’t the first time the industry has tried to push beyond the AAA label. Ubisoft previously marketed its live-service game Skull and Bones as a “AAAA” title, a claim that was widely mocked given the game’s poor reception. The concept, however, was meant to denote an unprecedented level of investment, development time, and technological ambition.
While the “AAAA” classification never caught on, Lowrie’s point is that GTA VI operates at a level so far beyond even that, it requires a new category. The game is expected to set new records not just in sales, but in its physical file size, the density of its open world, and its long-tail cultural staying power.
It’s important to note that this is an observation from an outside industry veteran, not an official designation from Rockstar Games. However, the sentiment underscores a universal understanding within the game development community: GTA VI is poised to be a generational event that will dominate the conversation in 2025 and beyond.
