A Bigger, More Diverse World

During the interview, Kalemba teased that The Witcher 4 will introduce players to brand-new regions, expanding the franchise’s already rich and immersive world.

“You’ll experience completely new regions,” Kalemba shared, hinting at a fresh setting that’s sure to captivate fans of the series. This new environment will also bring “plenty of new monsters,” adding to the thrill of exploration and combat.

Meet Bauk: A Fearsome New Foe

One of the monsters players will encounter in The Witcher 4 is Bauk, who made an appearance in the game’s teaser trailer shown during The Game Awards. But don’t expect a straightforward fight—Bauk is no ordinary foe.

“Bauk… actually plays with her own fears,” Kalemba revealed, suggesting that players will face psychological challenges in addition to physical ones. He described Bauk as “a tricky, tricky, tricky b*stard” and emphasized the importance of player decisions in shaping the encounter.

A Deeper Exploration of Monsters

Kalemba explained that The Witcher 4 takes a more nuanced approach to the concept of “monsters.” While the series has always blurred the lines between humans and beasts, the new game will dive even deeper into this theme.

“When you look at The Witcher, the way we dealt with the word ‘monster,’ we deal with it in a completely different perspective—starting from The Witcher 1… You deal with a regular monster, then you had humans that behave monstrously. Here, you have inner demons that you have to fight first to be able to finally spot [Bauk], encounter him, and kill him. He’s a very complex monster, very powerful,” Kalemba said.

This suggests that Bauk may manifest as a reflection of the protagonist’s own fears or past decisions, making the fight highly personal and story-driven.

Player Choices Matter

One of the most intriguing aspects of Bauk’s encounter is the impact of player choices. Kalemba hinted that decisions made during the game could influence the way players face their “inner demons” and ultimately confront Bauk.

Could this mean that Bauk’s challenges will vary based on how players navigate the story? While specifics are scarce, the emphasis on decision-making aligns with CD Projekt Red’s legacy of delivering narrative depth in The Witcher series.
